Amarillo, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico
May 18-24, 2014
Sunday, May 18
We'll meet this afternoon at the famous "Big Texan Motel and Steakhouse" (7701 East Interstate I-40: 806-372-6000) in Amarillo for dinner and to discuss the plan for the coming week. I'll give a short image presentation of our locations for the next day or so, but we'll plan an early evening so you can get rested from your travels.
Monday, May 19
After a Big Texan breakfast we'll follow old Rt 66 west through Amarillo past old motels and signs and on to the "Cadillac Ranch", Adrian, and Glen Rio before entering the High Plains of eastern New Mexico. We'll spend the night at one of the most famous motels on Old 66, the "Blue Swallow Motel" in Tucumcari. An abundance of old neon signs will provide fun shooting in the evening twilight.
Tuesday, May 20
Reminders of the Glory Days of Rt. 66 abound in Tucumcari, and we'll spend a relaxing day wandering the streets and sharing our visions. We'll dine in classics like Deans for breakfast and La Cita for a Tex-Mex dinner, and we'll continue where we left off last night with the old neons.
Wednesday, May 21
We'll spend a relaxing day wandering the streets of Tucumcari, refining our photographic skills among abundant reminders of the Glory Days of Rt. 66 and sharing our visions and insights. We'll dine in classics like Deans for breakfast and La Cita for a Tex-Mex dinner, and we'll continue where we left off last night with the old neons. And we'll spend another nostalgic night in the Blue Swallow.
Thursday, May 22
We'll do some morning exploring in Santa Rosa, then shoot our way on towards Albuquerque where we'll check into our motel near Old Town. We[ll spend the rest of the afternoon in the quiet charm of the old plaza and along Central Avenue where numerous old motels and signs can still be found. We'll have dinner amidst the 60's atmosphere of the Rt. 66 Diner, then more neons as we had back to our motel.
Friday, May 23
It's back along Central Avenue to the Knob Hill area for breakfast and some fun shooting the funky "Americana" along this section of the old highway. Afterwards we'll follow the old road as it loops south and then west towards Laguna Pueblo, then back east to Albuquerque along sections of a later alignment of Rt 66. We'll have dinner in Old Town which is very near our motel, then leisurely wandering amidst the old Spanish architecture of the plaza.
Saturday, May 24
Everyone heads for home with lots of good images, new friends, and a deeper awareness of what this old highway has meant in the history of this country.
