Fall in the Arches and Canyons of Southeast Utah
September 14-20, 2014
Sunday, September 14
We will be staying at the Bighorn Lodge, 550 South Main in Moab, Utah, where we will meet this afternoon when everyone has arrived. We'll plan on a relatively early dinner together followed by an image presentation of some of our locations for the coming week. You are encouraged to bring examples of your photography to share with the group during the week. Tonight we'll plan an early evening in preparation for an early start tomorrow morning.
Monday, September 15
We'll head out early this morning for sunrise at the "Courthouse Towers". We'll spend the morning shooting in this area and in nearby "Wall Street" before heading to the visitor's center to see the displays and a short video that will give you a good introduction to the area we will be exploring this week. We'll head back to the park around 2PM and will be shooting locations such as Skyline Arch, Broken Arch, Sandstone Arch, and some wonderful sandstone fins. We'll then head into the "Windows" and the "Garden-of-Eden" before heading to "Balanced Rock" for sunset.
Tuesday, September 16
We'll be out early again for sunrise in the "Windows" section of the park, where we'll spend the morning among the amazing formations like the "North and South Windows", "Turret Arch, and "Double Arch". When we head back into the park after lunch and a mid-day break we'll stop some fascinating ancient Anasazi rock art sites before heading on to Delicate Arch, where you will see one of the most amazing scenes in Canyon Country---Delicate Arch, glowing in the late sun, and framing the snow-capped La Sal Mountains in the background. This is a 3-mile round trip hike, and is fairly strenuous, but we will be in no hurry and will go slow. We'll also will visit an old Ute rock art location along the trail.
Wednesday, September 17
We'll head out early for sunrise at Dead Horse Point and some of the most spectacular views of the Needles District of Canyonlands and the Colorado River, over 2,000 feet below. We'll then enjoy more stunning vistas as we head back to Moab for lunch and a break. Desert Bighorn are common along this drive, and we may even get in a little wildlife photography.
Thursday, September 18
We'll head to the Islands-in-the-Sky section of Canyonlands National Park this morning for sunrise at Mesa Arch, and we'll finish our morning shoot in this area. We'll head into the "Devil's Garden" section of Arches NP this afternoon where we'll photograph "Landscape Arch", the world's longest natural arch, "Pine Tree" and "Navajo" arches and then see where sunset catches us.
Friday, September 19
We'll marvel at the view of the Green River and Needles District of Canyonlands NP over 2,000 ft. below as we greet sunrise from the "Green River Overlook" in the "Islands-in-the-Sky" district of Canyonlands NP. We'll then enjoy the majestic vistas as we had back to town, stopping at an ancient Freemont Indian pictograph panel on the way. Then later we'll enjoy the evening light among the fascinating formations in the "Garden-of-Eden" section of Arches NP.
Saturday, September 20
Everyone heads home with beautiful photographs and memories, and new friends.
